Dental jet polishing (sometimes called powder jet cleaning) works by using a controlled stream of air, water, and very fine powder particles to clean the surface of the teeth. The clinician uses a small handheld instrument that directs this gentle spray onto the teeth. The fine powder helps to break up dental plaque and biofilm while lifting stains caused by common habits such as drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, and smoking.

During your appointment, our clinician first checks the teeth and gums to assess overall oral health. If any hardened deposits (tartar) are present, these are usually removed with scaling instruments before the polishing stage begins. The powder spray is then applied to the teeth, helping to clean difficult areas and leaving the surfaces feeling smooth and fresh.

One of the advantages of this technique is that it can reach areas that may be harder to clean with traditional polishing methods, such as between teeth or around orthodontic brackets and dental implants. Many patients also find the treatment more comfortable and quick.

A traditional hygiene appointment usually involves scaling followed by polishing. Scaling removes hardened tartar from the teeth using ultrasonic or hand instruments. After that, the teeth are polished using a rubber cup and a polishing paste attached to a slow-speed dental handpiece.

Jet polishing differs mainly in the polishing stage. Instead of using a rubber cup and paste, it uses a fine powder spray to clean the tooth surfaces and remove stains. This method is particularly effective at removing soft plaque, biofilm, and surface staining, while scaling is still required if hardened tartar is present.

When used as part of a professional hygiene visit, jet polishing can help teeth feel cleaner and look brighter by removing everyday stains and plaque buildup. Combined with regular dental check-ups and good home care, it supports healthy teeth and gums while giving patients a refreshed smile.
