As temperatures rise, most people focus on staying cool and avoiding heat-related illness. However, hot weather can also affect your oral health in ways that are often overlooked. From dehydration and dry mouth to increased consumption of sugary drinks, a heatwave can create challenges for maintaining a healthy smile.

Here are some simple steps you can take to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy during periods of extreme heat.

Stay Hydrated

One of the most important things you can do during a heatwave is drink plenty of water. When your body becomes dehydrated, it produces less saliva. Saliva plays a vital role in protecting your teeth by washing away food particles, neutralising harmful acids, and helping to prevent tooth decay.

A dry mouth can lead to discomfort, bad breath and an increased risk of cavities, so keep a bottle of water nearby and sip regularly throughout the day.

Choose Tooth-Friendly Drinks

When temperatures soar, it's tempting to reach for fizzy drinks, sports drinks, iced coffees or fruit juices. While these beverages can be refreshing, many contain high levels of sugar and acid that can damage tooth enamel and contribute to tooth decay.

Water remains the best choice for hydration. If you do enjoy sugary or acidic drinks, try to:

  • Drink them with meals rather than sipping throughout the day.

  • Use a straw where possible.

  • Rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Choosing Tooth-Friendly Drinks

Avoid Chewing Ice

Many people chew ice cubes to cool down during hot weather, but this habit can be surprisingly harmful. Ice is hard enough to chip, crack or weaken teeth and may even damage fillings, crowns or veneers.

Instead, enjoy your cold drinks without chewing the ice.

Watch Out for Dry Mouth

Heat, dehydration, certain medications, and increased physical activity can all contribute to dry mouth. If your mouth feels persistently dry, you may notice increased sensitivity, bad breath or difficulty speaking and swallowing comfortably.

To help manage dry mouth:

  • Drink water regularly.

  • Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production.

  • Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

  • Maintain a good oral hygiene routine.

Don't Forget Your Lips

Your lips are vulnerable to sun damage just like the rest of your skin. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause dryness, cracking and discomfort.

Protect your lips by using a lip balm with SPF protection and reapplying it throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors.

Maintaining Good Oral Health All Summer Long

While a heatwave may seem unrelated to your dental health, staying hydrated and making smart choices about what you drink can have a significant impact on your teeth and gums. By drinking plenty of water, avoiding excessive sugary drinks and protecting your mouth from the effects of dehydration, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your smile healthy.
