Routine Hygiene
Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar and support long-term gum and oral health.

1
What to expect
Routine dental hygiene appointments are an essential part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. These visits are designed to remove plaque and tartar build-up, monitor the health of your gums, and help prevent common dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
2
The Procedure
During a routine hygiene appointment, your dental hygienist will first assess the condition of your teeth and gums. This may include checking for signs of gum inflammation, bleeding, plaque build-up, and areas that may require extra attention.

The hygienist will then carefully remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline. This process, known as scaling, helps eliminate bacteria that can lead to gum disease.

After scaling, your teeth are usually polished using a special polishing paste and a rotating brush. This helps remove surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean. In some cases, the hygienist may also provide a fluoride treatment to help strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay.

Throughout the appointment, you may also receive personalised advice on brushing techniques, flossing, and other oral hygiene practices to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums at home.

Instruments used
Dental hygienists use a range of specialised instruments to carry out the cleaning effectively and comfortably. These may include ultrasonic scalers, which use gentle vibrations and water to break down tartar deposits, as well as fine hand scalers and curettes to remove plaque and calculus from more detailed areas around the teeth and gums. A polishing handpiece with a soft rubber cup is then used to polish the teeth and remove staining.
4
The Outcome
Following a hygiene appointment, your teeth will feel smoother, cleaner, and fresher. Regular hygiene visits help reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath while also improving the appearance of your smile by removing surface stains.
By maintaining routine hygiene appointments alongside good home care, you can protect your oral health and keep your smile looking its best for years to come.
